IT WAS MOVED TO ITS CURRENT LOCATION IN 1945, AND SO HE'S BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH NOTEWORTHY GALVESTONIANS THAT INCLUDES PATRICK CARVILLE, WHO WAS AN IRISH IMMIGRANT WHO ARRIVED IN GALVESTON IN 1850 AND WORKED AS A CISTERN BUILDER.
IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT FOR ITS ASSOCIATION WITH THOMAS T.D.
ARMSTRONG. MR. ARMSTRONG WAS BORN IN LOUISIANA BUT GREW UP IN PORT ARTHUR.
HE EVENTUALLY PURCHASED THE BUSINESS AND RENAMED IT TO ARMSTRONG MORTUARY, AND IN TIME MR. ARMSTRONG BECAME A VERY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN WHO OWNED MULTIPLE RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES AND COMMERCIAL VENTURES.
HIS SUCCESS WAS SO NOTEWORTHY THAT HE WAS FEATURED IN EBONY MAGAZINE MORE THAN ONCE.
AND IT WAS NOTED YESTERDAY DURING THE LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING THAT IN 1961, MR. ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN TO BE ELECTED TO GALVESTON CITY COUNCIL.
THIS PROPERTY MIGHT BE THE ONLY SURVIVING PROPERTY ASSOCIATED WITH MR. ARMSTRONG. AND IT'S BECAUSE OF THIS STRONG ASSOCIATION WITH THE PROMINENT AND SUCCESSFUL AFRICAN-AMERICAN BUSINESSMAN, THE LANDMARK DESIGNATION WILL SERVE AS ESSENTIAL PRESERVATION.
