IT'S 14,000 SQUARE FEET WITH VARIOUS LANDSCAPING ALONG THE PARKING LOT AND THE SITE PERIMETER. IT INCLUDES LARGE TREE STRIPS AND ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES. IN THE CENTER PIECE OF THE PLAZA IS THE STATUTE TITLED HOPE, WHICH IS DOUG MCCLAIN'S INTERPRETATION OF POMPEO COPPINI. I'M SURE I NAILED THAT. HIS SCULPTURE COMMEMORATING THE 1900 STORM THAT HAS BEEN LOST. YOU CAN BARELY SEE IT THERE IN THE MIDDLE. IT WAS FUNDED IN PART BY A GRANT FROM THE MOODY FOUNDATION. WE PREVIOUSLY NOMINATED THIS IN THE CATEGORIES OF BEAUTIFICATION, DEVELOPMENT, AND PUBLIC INVESTMENT. IT WAS FIRST NOMINATED IN 2021. >> THIS IS 1118 SEALY. THIS IS IN THE EASTERN HISTORIC DISTRICT. IT'S HISTORIC RENOVATION THAT INCLUDED THE RECONSTRUCTION OF A CUPOLA, WHICH IS A HISTORIC FEATURE THAT WAS LOST AT SOME POINT AND THEN PUT BACK ON AS YOU CAN SEE IT THERE. THIS HOUSE YOU CAN SEE IN THE THOMAS EDISON FILMS THAT WERE MADE RIGHT AFTER THE 1900 STORM, NOT BY THOMAS EDISON HIMSELF, BUT USING HIS TECHNOLOGY. HE SENT A CREW HERE TO FILM THE AFTERMATH OF THE 1900 STORM. YOU CAN SEE THE HOUSE IN THERE. THERE IT IS IN THAT NEAT. YOU CAN SEE ITS CUPOLA. IT IS. IF YOU LOOK BACK ON THESE PICTURES, THESE DORMERS WERE ADDED LATER. THESE DORMERS ARE AFTER THE 1900 STORM. THIS CUPOLA SURVIVED THE 1900 STORM AND THEN WAS TAKEN OFF AT SOME POINT AND THEN WAS PUT BACK ON BY THE CURRENT OWNERS. IT'S INTERESTING HISTORY AND HAVING THIS PICTURE OF THE HOUSE RIGHT AFTER THE 1900 STORM IS REALLY SOMETHING THAT IS SPECIAL AND INTERESTING. IT'S HOME TO MARMO INNOVATIONS, WHICH WAS CREATED TO SUPPORT LOCAL START UP AND YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS WITH THE GOAL OF ENRICHING THE LIVES OF THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. YOU CAN SEE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE SCREEN, THE HOUSE HAD BEEN VERY HEAVILY MODIFIED IN THE 1960S, '70S AND IT'S SINCE BEEN SOLD. THEN WE HAVE GALVESTON ISLAND STATE PARK. THIS WAS A YEARS LONG RENOVATION. I THINK THAT THE PARK IT WAS CLOSED FOR THREE YEARS STARTING IN 2019 FOR $24 MILLION REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT. IT INCLUDES 95 CAMPSITES, 20 SHADES STRUCTURES, AN EQUESTRIAN AREA, AND PARK HEADQUARTERS BUILDING, NEW RESTROOMS ROADS AND CHANGING AREAS. $10.6 MILLION OF THE COST WAS FUNDED FROM A RESTORATION FUND SET UP AFTER THE DEEP WATER HORIZON OIL SPILL OF 2010. THE BEACH SIDE OF THE PARK RE OPENED IN JUNE OF ''22. WE FIRST NOMINATED THIS LAST YEAR IN '23 IN THE CATEGORIES OF ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC INVESTMENT, AND REDEVELOPMENT. WE HAVE HOMETOWN BANK. ARCHITECTURAL CANOPIES AND WINDOWSTON'S SHADES ACCENT THE BUILDING AS WELL AS PROVIDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY. IT OPENED IN MAY OF '23. WE NOMINATED IT IN '23 FOR PRIVATE INVESTMENT AND REDEVELOPMENT. IT WAS UNVEILED JUST ON SATURDAY. IT IS THE CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION'S LARGEST INVESTMENT IN PUBLIC ART WITHIN A BUDGET OF $70,000. A SCULPTURE CALLED RESOLVE IS MEANT TO BE A PHYSICAL DEPICTION OF GALVESTON'S RESILIENCE. THE SILHOUETTE OF THE STATUE IS A WAVE BREAKING OVER THE SEAWALL WITH THE WAVE BEING A REPLICA OF A SCROLL FROM A PRE-1900 STORM HOUSE ON THE ISLAND. IT WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED BY GALVESTON SCULPTOR IN BLACKSMITH DOUG MCCLAIN. STAFF NOMINATING THAT IN BEAUTIFICATION AND PUBLIC INVESTMENT. >> I HAVEN'T SEEN THAT. THIS IS THE BEACON OF HOPE ISLAND MARKET. IT'S OPERATED BY CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE DIOCESE OF GALVESTON HOUSTON. IT'S A FOOD PANTRY DESIGNED TO TAKE SOME OF THE STIGMA OUT OF USING SUCH SERVICES TO REDUCE WASTE AND TO ENCOURAGE MORE HEALTHY EATING AND HELP PEOPLE MOVE BEYOND NEEDING ASSISTANCE. IT'S LOCATED AT 4,700 BROADWAY IN THE GALVESTON ISLAND COMMUNITY CENTER AND IT IS LAID UP MORE LIKE A GROCERY STORE THAN A FOOD PANTRY, OFFERING REFRIGERATED ITEMS AND AT 6,500 SQUARE FEET. IT'S FIVE TIMES LARGER THAN THE PREVIOUS SPACE AND HAS ADDITIONAL SPACE TO HELP BETTER EXPERIENCE FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED FOOD WHILE PROVIDING SPACE FOR NUTRITION CLASSES AND CLIENT MEETINGS. IT OPENED IN NOVEMBER OF 2022. IT'S OPEN TO EVERYBODY, REGARDLESS OF INCOME OR ADDRESS. >> YOU GOT IT JUST LISTED AS PARTICIPATION? >> THAT WAS COMING FROM THE MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC WHO NOMINATED IT AND SHE NOMINATED IT IN PARTICIPATION. IT WAS BY THE GALVESTON ISLAND NATURE TOURISM COUNCIL, THE SCULPTOR, AND THE GALVESTON ISLAND STATE PARK THAT ALL PARTNERED TOGETHER TO DO THAT PROJECT. PARTICIPATION IN '21. WE DID THE SEAWALL INTERPRETIVE TRAIL, AND THAT WAS A PROJECT OF THE ARTIST BOAT. I'LL JUST NOTE FOR THE RECORD THAT COMMISSIONER ROSHAN EDWARDS HAS JOINED US. [LAUGHTER] THAT WAS AN ART PROJECT ALONG THE SEAWALL WHERE THEY WERE PARTNERING WITH VARIOUS ARTISTS TO DO MOSAICS ON THE BENCHES AND THE MOSAICS WERE TYPICALLY EDUCATIONAL IN NATURE ABOUT SEA LIFE. WE GAVE VISION GALVESTON AN AWARD IN 2020, AND THAT WAS FOR THE PUBLIC OUTREACH COMPONENT OF THEIRS.
