IN 1943, SHE SUCCESSFULLY SUED THE GALVESTON SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO DEMAND EQUAL PAY AND CONSIDERATION FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN TEACHERS. THE HOUSE, CURRENTLY AT 2018 AVENUE R, WAS BUILT IN 1901, REPLACING THE FAMILY'S HOUSE THAT WAS EARLIER DESTROYED. THE 1900 STORM WAS ORIGINALLY ONE STORY HOUSE, LOCATED AT 2727 AVENUE R, BUT WAS MOVED TO 2720 AVENUE R IN 1912 AND THEN MOVED AGAIN TO ITS CURRENT LOCATION IN 1915. IN 1914, THE PROPERTY THAT THE HOUSE WAS ON WAS PART OF, I BELIEVE, MCGUIRE PARK WAS CONDEMNED BY THE CITY TO CREATE MENARD PARK--WHAT WE KNOW TODAY AS MENARD PARK--WHICH DOES INCLUDE THE MCGUIRE-DENT RECREATION CENTER.
